Challenge - Day 3
Transcript Below
Hey, there! How did you sleep? Are you feeling refreshed? Are your dishes fresh? I hope you are beginning to develop some new habits.
Speaking of habits, you are probably holding your biggest habit in your hand right now. Yep. We’re talking about cell phones today. Did I just see you grab your phone a little tighter as I said that? It’s okay.
Cell phones hijack our thoughts and suck away our time. They help us feel connected when we are lonely. They fill our time and distract us from things we don’t want to think about or deal with.
You’re here for balance. You may or may not use your phone for work or career related content and creation. Honestly, if you’re feeling unbalanced right now, all of the extra voices screaming at you from social media telling you what to do, worry about, and care about do not help. You already know what you need. You have to clear space for your own mind to actually think. You also need to make sure you are spending time on what’s really important to you. Only you know what’s actually important in your life.
So, here’s the task. How old are you? 21? Perfect! That’s how many minutes I want you to spend on social media in the next 24 hours. For real. Just give yourself as many minutes as years you’ve been on this earth. I’m guessing it’s a few more than 21.
To make this happen, you need to do more than put your phone down or turn your notifications off. Trust me. Your fingers will open apps without you even realizing it. Instead, uninstall your favorite social media apps. When you are ready for your intentional social media time, reinstall them, set a timer, and go. When the timer goes off, uninstall them.
You can do this. You can do hard things. It’s just a phone.
During your designated social media time, pop into our community to share a screenshot of your screentime. If you don’t know how to do this yet, Google it for your specific phone. As a bonus, if you’re up to it, post a picture of one thing you did instead of scrolling. I can’t wait to celebrate with you when you’ve completed this task!
Balance is about being in control. By controlling what we allow to enter into our thoughts and how we spend our time, we can calm our minds to focus on your own little world. This age limit practice is just like a jump start. I don’t expect you to permanently align your social media use with your age. I want you to experience a day without it and then decide how to let it back into your life.
One more thing if you’re worried about not being able to chat with your friends through social media, take a minute right now to get their phone numbers so you can call or text them. We’ll talk more about friendships tomorrow.
Until then, keep going. You can do this. Your voice and your thoughts are more important than all the voices in your phone.
